Surprises
This year to date continues to be full of surprises in the world of baseball:
- The $200,000,000 Yankees are 5.5 Games out of First place and only a few games above .500.
- The Baltimore Orioles are still in First Place though the Red Sox are catching up to them.
- The White Sox are still the best team in baseball. And the Twins and Indians are both looking like potential competitors for the Wild Card.
- Manny is still hitting well below .300.
- The shortstop position seems to be short of talent this year. A far cry from the kick-ass power shortstop days pre-roid testing.
- The Washington Nationals are not in last place. In fact, they're in first place by 3.5 games and are going to get some more revenue since they've been bringing quite a bit of it to Major League Baseball. They may be a playoff candidate but its too early to tell and the Braves should never be written off.
The list could go on a little further but I've made my point. It's definitely interesting to see how things are going to unfold. Whats going to be interesting is watching the action with the trade deadline looming. The Yankees are desperate to make changes, but, I doubt many teams are going to want to take on some of their huge salaries for old players. Cashman seems willing to part with some of their prospects which is stupid. Him and Steinbrenner would be smart to just suck it up this year, let some contracts expire and bring up the young talent.
The Sox seem to have that in mind. They have a couple good farmhands that will make it up soon. Ramirez and Pedroia. I am curious, however, to see what they are going to do. We seem to be set at first base now. Millar has gotten off his ass and Olerud is still there to pick him up if necessary. We could probably use the most help on 2B right now. Bellhorn has a good OBP but its not consistent. He's an ok fielder as well. They could make an improvement there. The bullpen, however, is another story. They need to make some major changes there. Timlin is the only consistently good receiver they have right now. Halama, Mantei, Embree and Foulke are sucking it up big time. Once Schilling returns, we'll see Arroyo go to the bullpen which will be a big help there, but they need more. Interesting what we'll see go on there. I am still keeping my eyes on Clemens too. Our starters are doing ok, but he could be a nice addition to the team and we have some people that could be of value to Houston.
